Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
