British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he commented. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
