Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and given more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.
This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.
The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, the capital city.
The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
