Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise serious questions about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative voices to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these files for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the right was relatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the congressional approval to enact a law requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were provided physical binders of materials that contained little previously unseen data.
