Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
